Solar Film

What is Solar Control Film?

Solar Film is a window tinting application that we apply to the inside, and sometimes outside, of a residential or commercial building. Solar film is designed to help reduce heat, glare, and UV emitted from the sun.

Common solar film types include reflective film, dual-reflective film, Spectra’s selective film, ceramic film, natural film, and low energy film. Among these options, certain selections of window tint, like Low-E film, can help retain heat during the winter, while keeping heat out in the summer. Solar film is great for both residential window tinting and commercial tinting projects as it fits so many needs that each customer has.

Reflective Film (One-Way Privacy Film)

In short, reflective film provides a high heat-reduction window tinting solution at an affordable cost.

Reflective film is one of the most popular tinting options that commercial clients choose for their projects. Often, commercial projects are looking to conserve energy, lower cooling costs during summertime, and provide privacy for work areas during daytime. Reflective film is the perfect choice to address these concerns.

Dual-Reflective Film

Dual-reflective film has a special coating that keeps the interior side of the tint from appearing reflective, as the exterior does. Compared to reflective film, this design allows you to see out better and clearer at night from the inside, making it even more effective at providing daytime privacy. Dual-reflective film offers a wider selection of shade options, displaying a higher quality aesthetic and feel. We often recommend this film option for residential projects, like tinting the windows on your home or other structures on your property.

Spectra’s Selective Film

Display your cherished furnishings and priceless artwork without fear of UV fading. For residential clients, Spectra’s selective film is great for protecting your belongings, such as furniture or art, from fading due to heat damage. Spectra’s selective films are also great for many commercial applications. We help commercial clients like art galleries, museums, and courthouses protect their irreplaceable displayed pieces and historic tapestries. For many retailers, this film can protect your flooring and products from fading and UV damage.

Ceramic Film

Ceramic film is the newest technology in the window tinting industry. Tints are traditionally made from laminate, but ceramic is gaining a lot of attention. Where ceramic really shines is that it allows you to see out while providing privacy with glare reduction. If you are looking for a nighttime view, ceramic film gives you that flexibility. It offers low reflection on both the interior and exterior, while still giving you the privacy you are looking for. Ceramic film is usually 1-1.5 mil thicker, making them a higher quality product. This also gives them more longevity compared to laminate film.

Neutral Film

With neutral films, you will find a medium to medium-high* performance for heat and glare reduction. Neutral films are popular because they don’t cause a high reflective sheen on the exterior windows. They offer a more neutral look when you’re viewing the building from outside. In residential projects, this product gives homeowners the privacy and heat reduction they want, but without the mirrored effect. Neutral films also have a very neutral color when looking out, such as greens, browns, blues, and grays. Your view doesn’t become skewed, one way or the other.

Low Energy (Low-E) Film

Low-E film has an interior coating that redirects the radiant heat created in the house back into the home. It also has a high reflective coating on the outside to keep solar energy from coming in. It performs really well at keeping heat out, and fairly well at keeping it in, depending on which one you need. Low-E Film is best for residential or commercial customers looking to reduce energy costs, while keeping the temperature consistent inside.

Solar Film Tinting FAQ

What does the percentage on window tint mean?

The percentage is the amount of light that the window tint lets in. For example, if you have a window in your home or office with no tint, it’s letting in 100% light. When you apply a 35% film to the window, it’s only allowing 35% out of 100% of the light to come in. And, a 60% product will let in 60% of the light. The lower the number, the darker the film.

Why do the percentages differ from one brand to the next?

There’s a lot of science that goes into developing the films to make sure it’s safe for the glass and performs the way it should. Once the manufacturer hits their performance markers, the percentage measures the light the final product transmits.

Are there any geographical locations best suited for specific types of window tint? Can all types of tint be used in the Pacific Northwest?

They’re all great for the Pacific Northwest. The dual reflective films are great if you have green belt, forest views, or landscape views, while the V series is very good if you have water or sky views. When you’re looking at the harmony series, the 31, 41, and 51 have more earth tones. Those are great if you have a house out in the woods with a lot of greens and browns. They really make everything pop vibrantly. The 40% window tint is great for a high end apartment in Portland or high rise building with a sky view, overlooking everything. It’s a great choice for an aerial view because it has a very neutral color.

What window tint would you recommend for someone who has oceanfront properties?

It comes down to what their needs are. Many want privacy, but a lot of properties on the coast are west-facing, so glare-reduction is an important need. Dual reflective film is a great choice for the west side of the property, with a Spectra’s selective or a neutral film on the north or the east side. This allows them to still protect the property, but let light in.

How long will the window tint last?

Lumar and Vista use the CDF adhesives, those films last upwards of 30 years if they’re maintained correctly.

Is there a film that will allow you to see out day and night and give you privacy day and night?

At this time, no. They have not figured that out. We can give great privacy during the day, but at nighttime, once you flip your lights on, it does not work.

Will the window tint prevent fading a hundred percent?

No, it will not. It will give you excellent protection and slow down fading, making it less noticeable, but nothing will eliminate fading a hundred percent.

How will putting window tint on my windows affect my window’s manufacturer’s warranty?

If you put any window film on windows, it does void the window manufacturer warranty. Even if you put window shades closer than four inches or the wrong type of window shades, it can void your window warranty. As long as you have an existing window warranty in place, you will get a three year seal failure and a five year glass breakage warranty from the date of install of the window film. This will pay up to $475 for replacement and put new film on the window. There is also a Vista gold warranty that you can purchase for an additional 40 cents a square foot. If you have a lifetime warranty that you want to maintain, this will duplicate your existing window warranty before the film’s put on.

What is the process from the moment that the customer calls? What do you expect each step to be?

We do an onsite free estimate where we evaluate the needs of the customer. During this time, we take a look at the job site, get measurements and show the customer samples of the tint. From there, we set up an install appointment where the crew will come out to cut the film down to fit each window. They use drop cloths and booties to protect the area during the cleaning and application process. We want to make sure that we’re respecting and protecting your property.

What if I have a problem after the installation? What should I do?

You’d want to contact Ultimate Film Pros directly; we’d be your first point of contact. We try to resolve anything you need, warranty or concerns. If, for some reason, we were unavailable, you still have the manufacturer warranty. You can contact Lumar, Vista or any of the other manufacturers that we use on your project to get warranty service directly through them.

What do you leave with the customer after the install day? Do you leave any instructions on how to clean the windows, etc?

We leave care instructions, letting you know what to expect and how to clean the windows. You will know what to expect from the drying process, then how you should care for the windows afterward. You will also receive a filled out warranty form and an email of the paid invoice.

How long does it take to do the installation?

On average, not counting ladder work, it takes about 20-35 minutes per pane to install the tint, depending on the type of window. For example, a 3,000 square foot home, two levels will take one to two days.

How do I pick the perfect shade of window tint?

When picking out the shade, it’s all about what your needs are. Are you looking for heat reduction? Do you need privacy? Do you need glare reduction, fade reduction, etc? From there, once you’ve determined your needs, you can choose the best film type for you. Then, you can pick the shade of the film to determine how much light you want to let in.
